To celebrate the bicentenary of Gustave Courbet's birth, it was necessary, after having recalled all that art owes to the aesthetic freedom that the painter was able to impose in his time, to show how much it remains a reference for today's artists.

And it is Yan Pei-Ming, a contemporary and internationally renowned painter, who will confront himself with a dozen major works by the master of Ornans. It is in Courbet's workshop in Ornans - currently undergoing restoration - that Yan Pei-Ming will produce from March 2019 onwards the canvases that will take up the challenge of a face-to-face meeting.

The exhibition Yan Pei-Ming face à Courbet will seek to translate the multiple artistic collusion between these two painters some six generations apart.

Born in Shanghai in 1960, Yan Pei-Ming arrived in France in 1980 and studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Dijon. Painting is then considered as an outdated medium but Yan Pei-Ming traces his way against the current, persisting in the representation

huge portraits. He imposes himself by the strength of his energetic and sensitive painting at the same time.

There are many similarities between Yan Pei-Ming's way of being and painting and Courbet's, a broad and sure gesture, a battle fought on large formats and always an emotional density that the artist knows how to hide under his serene and joyful appearance.
